What is transformational coaching?
Transformational coaching is a personal growth approach that brings deep, effective and lasting change in areas of your life that are difficult, stuck or not working as well as you’d like them to.
Why would I need transformational coaching?
As we go through life we take on strategies and personas to deal with things that are traumatic or not easy to handle. These are useful at the time but they stay with us and become fixed ways of being, habitual and automatic. Like knee-jerk reactions, we have no choice but to think, feel and act in a particular way in particular circumstances, whether or not it’s appropriate or serves us well.
It’s as if parts of us are frozen in our past experiences, which dictate how we are in the present even though the events themselves are long gone. The past acquires a power over us that restricts our freedom to handle life in a way that works well and creates the best outcomes. It colours our emotions, thoughts, moods and actions without us being consciously aware of it.
Transformational coaching can liberate you from the domination of your past, clearing away the barriers to you achieving your full potential. Instead of being compelled to be a certain way by fixed ideas and attitudes from the past, you’ll be free to be your authentic self in the present moment, whatever life presents. You’ll have mastery in relation to your life and be able to fully and freely express all aspects of yourself.

What makes transformational coaching different from other approaches?
Many therapies and personal growth techniques focus on analysing and explaining a problem, figuring out reasons why it’s there, looking for a past event that caused it and working on that event to solve the present problem.
Traditional approaches can bring some relief but they often add a layer on top of the problem rather than resolving it, which is only papering over the cracks. The person now has a problem plus some explanations, reasons and justifications for it. They might even become identified or fixated with their problem or the supposed cause, making it more difficult to let go of. Perhaps they’ll try another therapy, read some self-help books or go on a self-improvement course, but still their problem persists. Trying to force a problem to go away by ‘therapising’ it in this way only makes it more stuck.
Transformational coaching is different. It resolves the underlying personality structures and fixed patterns that are holding the problem in place. Once this is done, the problem has no foundation to keep it there and it resolves, restoring freedom and mastery in that area of your life.
Transformational coaching is a refreshing alternative to traditional therapies and is especially good for resolving things that people have been trying unsuccessfully to change using other methods. Endlessly analysing, talking about and trying to explain problems can be tiresome, unproductive and costly, but with transformational coaching you can start resolving them now and living your life to the full.
How does transformational coaching work?
With transformational coaching we don’t focus on finding reasons, explanations or causes for a problem. We deal with it as it exists right now, together with how you’re relating to it. The entirety of the problem is here with you now in present time, so that’s where we look, not in a past event. There is a connection between past events and the current problem but the solution isn’t to be found in analysing past events.
All the answers are within us, although hidden from view (in our ‘blind spots’), and they can be revealed by applying transformational coaching procedures. Things in our blind spots influence how we think, feel and act but they lose their power to do that once we locate them and become fully aware of them. Our problems are then able to clear up, and frequently do so without effort. Where previously we had no choice but to be a certain way, transformational coaching gives us back the freedom to choose how to be.
The coaching processes themselves involve me guiding you to consciously observe, inspect and experience the personality structures and fixed patterns that are underpinning your problem. No special skills are necessary for you to do transformational coaching. The techniques are simple and gentle yet effective and deep acting.
