Do you feel that life is somehow calling you to change? Perhaps circumstances keep showing you that you need to make a change or you know that some part of your life isn’t working and a different approach is required. At times it can even feel like you’re being pushed to change and that life is sending you wake-up calls.
Or do you feel that something in you wants to emerge and express itself? Perhaps a creative or entrepreneurial side of you that hasn’t been able to come out before. Or maybe there’s something you’ve always wanted to do but everyday life got in the way.
You might have an inner knowing that there’s something you should be doing with your life, some purpose to be fulfilled. This is sometimes described as an awakening of consciousness or a spiritual awakening. It feels like a call from the universe, or from deep within yourself, to step up and do what you came here to do (although you don’t have to see it in spiritual terms). Or maybe you just know there’s more to life than how things are for you at present.
Do you feel drawn to do something inspiring and meaningful, something that makes a difference in the world or in other people’s lives? At a certain time of life – perhaps after achieving material comfort, having a successful career or raising children – we start to seek more meaning in life and think in terms of what we can give to the world rather than what it can give to us. We might wonder what mark we’ll leave on the world, what our legacy will be.
Signs of being called to change
These are some indicators of being called to change. Do any of them sound familiar to you?
- Life is a struggle, it isn’t working or you ‘never meant it to turn out this way’.
- You feel stuck or limited in some area of your life, as if you’re boxed in and there are no possibilities available to you outside that box.
- Patterns repeat themselves and life seems like Groundhog Day – for example, you always attract the wrong type of partner and your relationships keep failing; work isn’t satisfying and your job’s going nowhere; money is always a problem.
- You have uncontrollable emotional reactions or ways of thinking – for example, you always get angry or upset with certain people or situations; some things always push your buttons and you can’t seem to stop it.
- You have negative or limiting beliefs about yourself – for example, you see yourself as not good enough, unlovable or helpless to change things.
- You have unexplained aches, pains or ill-health or you’re depressed.
- You have habits or addictions that no longer serve you – for example, drinking too much, smoking, using drugs, eating the wrong types of food or too much food.
- Fears or phobias are holding you back.
- You’re frozen in a past trauma or shock and it’s stopping you enjoying life.
- You feel like a rudderless boat adrift on an ocean, with no sense of direction or purpose and no mastery over yourself or your life.
- Despite your successes you still have a lack of meaningfulness and fulfilment in your life, a nagging feeling that there’s got to be more to life than this.
How to make changes in your life
